Perancak is a fishing village on Bali's west coast in Jembrana Regency, about 90 kilometres from Ngurah Rai Airport and 2.5 to 3 hours from the south. The estuary meets the ocean here, with colourful traditional boats resting along the shoreline. People come for the sunset. The view faces west across the Bali Strait toward Java, with painted hulls and masts in the foreground.

Perancak isn't about beach clubs or nightlife. It feels quieter than South Bali, with a rhythm set by the tide rather than the tour schedule. Most residents are fishermen, and the traditional boats here are Perahu Bodo — high-curved, brightly painted vessels originally from South Sulawesi. They give the shoreline a look you won't find elsewhere on the island.

What to see and do

Sunset is the reason to go, but Perancak has a few other things to do if you arrive earlier.

  • Watch sunset from the estuary shoreline, ideally near the river mouth where the boats anchor. Arrive by 4:30 PM to catch the full light transition.
  • Walk among the Perahu fishing boats; their colourful hulls and carved bows are great photo subjects in late afternoon light.
  • Visit the Kurma Asih turtle conservation centre (9:00 AM–5:00 PM), where staff rehabilitate hawksbill, leatherback, and olive ridley turtles. Hatchling releases run seasonally from May to October.
  • Trek the mangrove boardwalk along the estuary. The 165-metre elevated trail threads through dense canopy and birdlife.
  • Take a guided boat through the 1.5-kilometre mangrove river channel, navigating narrow passages lined with tall mangroves.
  • Eat fresh seafood at the beachside warungs — ikan bakar, squid, and prawns are local staples.

Best time to visit

Golden hour from about 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM is the obvious time to visit. The dry season (April–October) usually offers the clearest skies; during the wet season (November–March), sunsets are more likely to be cloudy or rainy.

Bring insect repellent; the estuary attracts mosquitoes in late afternoon, especially during the wet/dry transition.

How to get there

FromDrive timeNotes
Ngurah Rai Airport2.5 to 3 hoursVia Denpasar-Gilimanuk highway, heavy truck traffic

A private driver or rental scooter is the most realistic option; Grab and Gojek coverage is limited in Jembrana. Because the drive from the south is long, most travellers combine Perancak with Medewi or other Jembrana stops as an overnight trip.
